The primary objective of this publication is to provide a rigorous, evidence-based analytical resource on how artificial intelligence may affect informal employment and livelihoods in Africa: from the potential occupational exposure of informal workers to generative AI, measured with frameworks adjusted to informal occupation structures and digital-access constraints, through the broader channels by which AI reaches informal livelihoods, including displacement spillovers, competition effects, platform mediation, AI value chains, augmentation, and AI-enabled formalization, to the distributional incidence across sectors, gender, age, and skill, and the policies and investments that can protect vulnerable informal workers while enabling informal enterprises to capture AI’s productivity benefits.
