OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

To facilitate communication and flow of ideas among Members States of the WHO African Region and provide translation, editing and information support to Regional Programme operations.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will perform the following duties:1. Translate and revise from English and French a variety of technical and difficult texts in the health, scientific and related administrative and legal fields for the statutory and educational meetings of the Regional Office, as well as for the general conduct of the regional programme. Texts so translated shall be of such quality as not to require a revision; 2. Edit and redraft difficult and obscure texts in Portuguese in accordance with WHO's editorial rules and especially during Regional Committee meetings when called upon to do so; 3. Manage the Portuguese Translation Section, in particular by: -Guiding and training younger or less experienced translators assigned to the section, guiding, supervising and revising the work of outside or consulting translators, building a terminology data base for the Portuguese section of the Unit;4. Supervise the Portuguese team of translators during meetings of the regional Committee or special tasks; 5. Review and clear printers' proofs submitted by the Graphics section; 6. Perform other related duties in his/her area of competence as may be assigned by the Head of the Unit, e.g. exceptionally translating from Portuguese into English/French; 7. Provide simultaneous interpretation from English and/or French into Portuguese during meetings of the Regional Office.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: Advanced and recognized University degree with a degree in modern languages, and/or specialisation in translation and interpretation.
Desirable: Studies in the social or biomedical sciences.

Experience

Essential: Seven years' progressive experience in translation and/or revision of work at the international level, preferably in an intergovernmental or United Nations system organization.
Desirable: Editing, publications and management experience.

Skills

Good management, communications, public relations and interpersonal skills. Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques and practices of a wide range of research issues and ability to work in a multi-disciplinary and cultural environment. Experience in planning/organizing international meetings. Knowledge in WHO procedures.

REMUNERATION

WHO salaries for staff in the Professional category are calculated in US dollars. The remuneration for the above position comprises an annual base salary starting at USD 71,332 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance, as applicable), a variable post adjustment, which reflects the cost of living in a particular duty station, and currently amounts to USD 3353 per month for the duty station indicated above. Other benefits include 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, home leave, and an education grant for dependent children.
