UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS 111) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi to meet its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience, and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’.  The programme focuses on: early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralized services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication.  The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.

How can you make a difference?
Malawi has made progress in the reduction of child mortality but slower progress in neonatal and maternal mortality. Further reduction of maternal and child mortality will require continued scaling up and sustaining of cost effective Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent interventions including addressing high levels of stunting Malawi country office has adopted an integrated approach to address child survival and development with a focus on communities.
Under the overall guidance of the Deputy Representative, s/he is accountable for the development, design, planning, implementation and management of the overall Early Childhood Pillar of the country programme, from strategic planning and formulation to delivery of results. S/he leads and manages the integrated pillar teams including establishing plans of action to achieve concrete and sustainable results according to plans, allocation, results based-management approaches and methodology (RBM), as well as UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework, and does so in consultation with the Regional Health Adviser.

As head of the section and pillar lead, s/he lead and supervise a group of professional and support staff to develop and administer the pillar results with a view of integrating equity and gender considerations across all aspects of the country programme.
In addition to being the principal supervisor for various staff, the incumbent may also serve as the secondary supervisor for others. For the latter situation, they will provide input to the principal supervisor during performance reviews on the technical quality of a staff member's work and his/her overall contribution to the output results that they have worked on together

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) in one of the following fields is required: public health/nutrition, pediatric health, family health, health research, global/international health, health policy and/or management, environmental health sciences, biostatistics, socio-medical, health education, epidemiology or another relevant technical field.
*A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
A minimum of eight years of professional experience in one or more of the following areas is required: public health/nutrition planning and management, maternal and neonatal health care, HIV AIDS or health emergency/humanitarian preparedness.
Experience working in a developing country is considered as an asset.
Relevant experience in a UN system agency or organization is considered as an asset.
Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency is considered an asset.
Fluency in English is required.  Knowledge of another official UN language or local language of the duty station is considered as an asset.
