GRADE:    CONTRACT LENGTH: Full Time

CHILD SAFEGUARDING: 

The role holder will have contact with children and/or young people either frequently (e.g. once a week or more) or intensively (e.g. four days in one month or more or overnight) because they work in country programs; or are visiting country programs; or because they are responsible for implementing the policy checking/vetting process staff.
 ROLE PURPOSE:The Communication Coordinator will lead the planning, coordination, and execution of all communication and visibility activities related to Save the Children projects. The role will ensure strategic alignment with donor requirements, organizational branding, and advocacy goals. The coordinator will manage content creation, case studies, media engagement, social media content, and production of communication materials to support different project milestones from launch to closure.

SCOPE OF ROLE:  Reports to: Media and Communications Manager

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Provide communications support to all field offices, ensuring consistent, effective, and high-quality messaging and visibility deliverables.
Develop and implement area communications plans aligned with the Country Strategy Plan, ensuring coherence across all field locations.
Proactively propose ideas and initiatives to strengthen Save the Children’s visibility, presence, and impact in the regions.
Monitor and analyze communication trends in the humanitarian sector to adjust messaging, identify opportunities, and mitigate risks.
Work closely with partner organizations to establish systems that promote consistent messaging, enhance visibility, support localization, and facilitate joint content collection.
Provide regular updates on context developments and programmatic activities from area offices to inform advocacy, media, and communications outputs.
Support the Media Team in coordinating and maintaining relationships with local journalists and media outlets to enhance coverage and visibility of Save the Children’s work.
Support media engagement by identifying human interest stories, drafting press materials, and coordinating media visits in line with safety and safeguarding protocols.
Support teams in meeting donor compliance requirements and addressing communications related needs.
Support the teams with the design of communications/visibility materials, collaborating with contractors, or working independently to ensure professional and impactful outputs.
Collaborate with Advocacy and Programs teams to design and implement special communications projects and public events that engage key audiences.

Content:

Ensure all communications products adhere to quality standards, brand guidelines, and Child Safeguarding policies.
Maintain a well-organized content library, ensuring that metadata, consent forms, and storage systems are properly managed and accessible.
Collect and produce content, both independently and with contractors, to support advocacy, visibility, and donor compliance, including stories, photos, videos, and case studies, across all project field offices.

General:

Comply with Save the Children policies and practice with respect to child protection, code of conduct, health and safety, equal opportunities and other relevant policies and procedures.

KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:

Programme Support

Lead information and communication flows between emergency responses and a variety of internal and external stakeholders (including situation reports, dashboards, and trackers)
Produce accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to emergency and Save the Children's emergency response — including key messages, Q&A's and factsheets.
Ensure that results from case study collection are fed back into humanitarian response team & planning.
 
Information and Communications, Advocacy and Fundraising

Produce accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to the humanitarian responses in South Sudan— including key messages, Q&A's, internal email updates, factsheets, reactive lines for media and advocacy work.
Oversee and act as a focal point for all visit requests to humanitarian sites, coordinating approval of requests and ensuring visitors adhere to the visits protocol.
Work with the Media and Communications manager to ensure the humanitarian communications response strategies are carried out in line with the country's strategic plan.
Ensure all information for external use presents accurate information and appropriate images and does not put Save the Children at Risk.
Available for travel to the field sites to collect case studies and undertake photography/videography commissions and case studies.
Collaborate with Advocacy colleagues to ensure core messaging is consistent when shared externally. 
Manage the production of compelling photo stories, case studies and audio-visual materials from the field to highlight Save the Children's work, including the commissioning of photography and film when required and in line with SCI policies and procedures (all consent forms on file and available).
Determine how to use various materials through different communications channels (print, web page, social media, radio, television).
Evaluate results and impact of media and communications activities, work closely with the M&E department to translate data into impact stories. 
Ensures adherence to policy and procedure and that the rights of families and children are respected in all materials produced and disseminated (voice, photo, video, written).
Develop and disseminate communication products such as invitations, podcasts, and blogs as relevant. 
 
Capacity Building:

Build the capacity of partners, field staff and interns in story gathering, photography, media training and information management throughout the response.
 
Multimedia:

In coordination with line manager, undertake multi-media commissions and produce content to accompany compelling case studies particularly on our work around child protection, health and nutrition, food security and livelihoods, education.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Essential Skills

University degree or equivalent experience in journalism, media, communications or a similar discipline. 
Proven experience of developing and managing the production of communications materials for INGOs or other similar organizations in emergencies and in humanitarian crises for a minimum of 2-4 years.
Can produce accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to both programme support and humanitarian situation — including key messages, Q&A's and factsheets, case studies, press releases, media statements, briefs amongst others. 
High level of both spoken and written English. 
Deep understanding of the South Sudan Humanitarian Context.
Proven ability to work with communities and partners to gather case studies, testimonies and information on the humanitarian situation and on programmes.
An initiative-taking, proactive, inspiring attitude with the ability to manage and prioritize an unpredictable workload and solve problems quickly with limited support.
At least 3 years of professional experience in communications, multimedia, journalism, media or external communications, work in an INGO or media setting.
Can produce accurate, clear and consistent information and communication outputs relating to both program support and humanitarian situations.
Strong coordination and project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks, contractors, deadlines, and priorities across several project sites or field locations.
Evidence of excellent English verbal and written communication skills for a wide range of different audiences, including donors, journalists and the ‘general public’.
Ability to strategically target a wide range of audiences is essential.
Experience producing high-quality written and visual content (e.g., stories, photo captions, short videos, case studies) under tight deadlines.
Experience in leading information and communication flows between emergency responses and a variety of internal and external stakeholders;
Proven photo and video editing skills (e.g., Adobe Lightroom, InDesign/Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Davinci Resolve, etc.
Support the Humanitarian Lead in overseeing SCI’s HF portfolio across South Sudan, ensuring effective and compliant implementation of all HF-funded projects.
Support to liaison with OCHA on all HF-related matters, including project proposals, budget revisions, no-cost extensions, and monitoring visits.
Monitor the overall implementation of progress and expenditure rates of HF projects, identifying delays, bottlenecks, and compliance risks, and escalating issues to the Humanitarian Lead as needed.
Support documentation of lessons learned and best practices from HF projects to inform future proposals and humanitarian programming.

Desirable:

Prior experience working in humanitarian contexts.  
Photo editing and graphic design skills. 
Experience with design and audio-visual software is an advantage.
