Background and Organizational Setting
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), established in 1972, is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The United Nations Environment Assembly, the governing body of UNEP, is the world’s highest-level decision-making body on the environment, with a universal membership of all 193 Member States. The Assembly meets biennially in Nairobi, Kenya, to set priorities for global environmental policies and develop international environmental law. Through its ministerial declaration and resolutions, the Assembly provides leadership, catalyzes intergovernmental action on the environment, and contributes to the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
UNEP through its Science Division has the mandate to keep under review the world environmental situation in order to ensure that emerging environmental problems of wide international significance are prioritized and receive appropriate and adequate consideration by governments, and to promote the contribution of the relevant international scientific and other professional communities to the acquisition, assessment and exchange of environmental knowledge and information.
The World Environmental Situation Room applied the Global Environmental Data Strategy to empower the science-based multilateralism. Also, it functioned as a gateway to inform decisions for people, places and planet. It is designed to provide a federated data system of the best openly accessible environmental data, information, and knowledge with adequate analytical capacity, to support decision making, policy setting, and action at the global, regional, national and local levels for the environment and sustainable development.
Within this framework, the multi-stakeholder fund program is the sustainable powerhouse as the carrying infrastructure to secure the process of achieving the WESR’s vision through global collective actions. The multi-stakeholder fund program requires the capacity of mobilizing resources across all domains at the regional and national level. This strategic fund-raising framework is tailored for facilitating different stakeholders that share the vision as a common.
Under the supervision of the Chief, Big Data Branch, Science Division, and in close collaboration with other staff of the World Environment Situation Room, the Data analyst and resources mobilization consultant is expected to strengthen communication and outreach, as well as partnership and advance strategy for World Environmental Situation Room (WESR) including National Environment Situation Rooms (NESR)
The consultant will be based in Nairobi, with occasional missions as and when required for official duties.
