UNICEF Malawi Country Programme (2019-2023) is aligned with the Government of Malawi’s Growth and Development Strategy (MDGS III) and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). The programme supports the Government of Malawi to meet its commitment to respect, protect and fulfil children’s rights in line with international conventions and standards. The country programme is guided by the principles of children’s rights, equity, gender equality, inclusion and resilience, and supports evidence-based, integrative and innovative programming. The vision is that ‘all girls and boys in Malawi, especially the most disadvantaged and deprived, realize their rights’.  The programme focuses on: early childhood (parenting, high-impact social services, early stimulation and learning), middle childhood and adolescence (learning, multi-sectoral services, active citizenship), communities (decentralized services and systems, community ownership, social norms), programme effectiveness (monitoring, evaluation, HACT, Innovation, Social Protection and Social Policy and External Communication.  The programme is based on ‘leaving no child behind’, realizing ‘rights for all children in Malawi’.
 
 How can you make a difference?
Under the supervision of the Communication Specialist, the incumbent will assist in planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating a marketing and communication strategy to get the Girls Secondary Education Trust and Funo Langa (My Wish) fundraising campaign into the public domain, raising money from Malawian companies, individuals and expatriates to support secondary scholarships for children from poor backgrounds.
Summary of key functions/accountabilities:
 
1. MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION PLAN
A communication and marketing strategy is developed, and an advertising agency is recruited to assist with implementation. The production of marketing and communication products and materials are timely executed and followed up to support the strategy and achieve fundraising objectives. An outreach plan is developed for the Malawian diaspora.
 
Duties & Tasks         
Develop a communication and marketing strategy for the Girls Secondary Education Trust and Funo Langa marketing campaign
Recruit an advertising agency to assist with the implementation of the strategy.
Produce marketing and communication products and materials (briefing notes, images, video. webpages etc) to support the strategy and achieve fundraising objectives.
Develop an outreach plan to fundraise from the Malawian diaspora.
Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other communication materials for both web-based and traditional media, as appropriate.
Follow up on the production of communication materials, including videos, and oversee the qualitative aspects of production, (quality control, translations, reviews of layout and graphic design etc.) to meet standards as set out in the UNICEF Communication Toolkit.
Recommend established contacts, networks, resources and processes to support communication activities.
 
2. MEDIA RELATIONS
Effective and timely professional assistance and support are provided in developing, drafting and maintaining materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, online – to communicate the Trust and campaign to a wider audience.

Duties & Tasks
Working with the Media Officer, develop, draft and maintain materials and relationships with journalists and media outlets covering all media – print, TV, radio, online – to communicate the Girls Secondary Education Trust and Funo Langa marketing campaign to a wider audience.
Assist in developing and maintaining close collaboration with mass media, as well as with groups and organizations whose support is essential to the achievement of the communication strategy.
Assist in drafting and editing articles, press releases, human interest stories and other marketing/communication materials in all media formats, as appropriate.
Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefing and visits of media and other special interest groups. Assist in the planning, logistic and administrative arrangements for them.
Assist in collaborating with the media through activities such as organizing project site visits, facilitating photo coverage and TV footage and utilizing both web-based and traditional media as appropriate. 
 
3. MONITORING AND EVALUATION
Regular monitoring and evaluation activities are undertaken according to the work plan to ensure maximum impact and continuous improvement of country communication efforts. Ensure results and reports are prepared and shared on a timely basis.

Duties & Tasks
Monitor and evaluate the appropriate and timely dissemination of marketing and communication materials to target audiences and participate in the evaluation of their impact. Monitor and evaluate the use and effectiveness of media materials. Maintain a library of media coverage.
Ensure good quality data collection, analysis and evaluation and reporting to ensure effective communication strategies, planning and effective and efficient communication.
Undertake lessons learned review of successful and unsuccessful communication experiences as directed by supervisor.
 
4. CELEBRITIES, PARTNERS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Relationships with partners are developed and maintained to ensure smooth running of the campaign, including banks and mobile money providers. High profile individuals and celebrities are leveraged to raise awareness of the Trust and campaign. Special events are organised to raise awareness and celebrate key milestones.

Support the Chief of Communication in the coordination of the annual KIND Fund donor visit
Prepare background communication and promotional materials for briefings and visits of media, celebrities, donors and partners. This task includes preparing information materials (e.g., press releases, programme summaries, country fact sheets and media kits) and assisting in the planning, logistics and administrative arrangements.
 
5. DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS
UNICEF Malawi’s social media channels, and those of partner organisations, are used effectively to promote the Trust and campaign.

Duties & Tasks
Working with the Visibility Officer, ensure that UNICEF Malawi’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and WordPress, are used effectively to promote the Trust and campaign.
Coordinate with web and social media staff in partner organisations to ensure that they are sharing and promoting materials about the Girls Secondary Education Trust and Funo Langa marketing campaign.
Ensure all channels are up to date with the latest content and respond to comments from fans and followers.
Contribute content for UNICEF Malawi’s blog and monthly e-newsletter, including taking photos and writing stories from the field.
 
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have:
University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.
Two years practical professional work experience in communication, print and broadcast media, or interactive digital media.
Fluency in written and spoken English and a local language is required.
