How can you make a difference?
The Child Protection Specialist reports to the Chief, Child Protection. The functions and key accountabilities include: programme development and planning, programme management, monitoring and delivery of results, technical and operational support to programme implementation, networking and partnership building as well as innovation, knowledge management and capacity building.
The post covers child protection system strengthening, including justice for children and birth registration as well work to prevent and respond to violence against children (VAC) in line with the current UNICEF Kenya Country Programme. The Child Protection Specialist contributes to the achievement of results according to plans, using results based-management approaches and methodology and according to UNICEF’s Strategic Plans, standards of performance and accountability framework.
Main activities:
Lead work on child protection systems strengthening team and provide technical expertise and strategic advice to the other CP specialists working in the area of alternative care, harmful practices, access to justice.
Lead and manage the Violence against Children portfolio, which entails overseeing the development of the VAC response plan, managing partnerships; ensuring a strong coordination and ownership by the Government; mobilizing resources and commitments for on-going programme response; engaging in global processes and regional initiatives with regard to VAC;
Provide technical support to government counterparts, NGO partners and UN system partners and other partners in the formulation and implementation of strategies and programmes and the application and understanding of UNCEF policies, strategies, processes and best practices and approaches to child protection in order to support programme management, implementation and delivery of results;
Promote knowledge management in child protection by sharing information, situation analysis, lessons learned; support the roll out of administrative data collection systems; analyze and use relevant data to further understanding of the child protection situation and issues affecting effective delivery of child focused child protection/social welfare services.
Build and sustain effective and close working partnerships with relevant government counterparts, national stakeholders, global partners, allies, donors and academia – through active networking, advocacy and effective communication - to build capacity, exchange knowledge and expertise and to reinforce cooperation to achieve sustainable and broad results in child protection.
Participation in programme monitoring, evaluations and reviews as well as annual sector review meetings within UNICEF, the UN system, with government counterparts, and NGO partners.
Supervise team members by providing them with clear objectives and goals, establish clear individual performance objectives, goals and timelines and plan and ensure timely performance management and assessment of the team.
Function as the back-up to the Chief of Section and assume the role of Officer-in-Charge in the Child Protection section as needed.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…
An advanced university degree (Master’s or higher) , preferably in Social Sciences, law or other relevant field. A first University Degree in a relevant field combined with 2 additional years of professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an Advanced University Degree.
A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience in child protection, at international level in child protection – some of the experience can be obtained at the national level.
Work in a developing country is required; previous experience in sub-Saharan Africa, ESAR region is considered an asset.
Excellent analytical, negotiation, communication and advocacy skills.
Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
