DATES: FOUR TO TWELVE WEEK PLACEMENT

NEGOTIABLE LOCATION: VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN URBAN AND RURAL UGANDA  

 

THE ROLE  Street Child is seeking volunteers to help launch our new programmes in Uganda. With an ongoing refugee crisis in the North of the country, and poverty debilitating many more families, there is a serious gap in education and children’s wellbeing. Following Street Child’s policy to help the world’s most vulnerable children, our work will focus on refugee and street-connected children who lack access to meaningful education and security. We need volunteers to conduct in-depth research to help inform the future of our programmes as we look to starting operations in yet another country.  

 

This placement is a unique opportunity to take a frontline role in helping to launch new programmes research, and make a lasting and critical contribution to an international development organisation. You will be gaining the skills and experience you will need for a career in the humanitarian sector, while also  taking on a new challenge, meeting extraordinary people and exploring a beautiful country. And, most importantly, you will be helping children living in poverty and crisis to access meaningful education.  

 

Street Child offers placements for anywhere between four to twelve weeks to support the work of our local partners in Uganda. Working alongside the Uganda team, your key responsibilities will include –  

 

● Conducting literature reviews on assigned issues and proposing frameworks for how the issues can be understood within the context of Street Child’s vision and mission

● Conducting primary and secondary research at field sites using bespoke methodologies and methods, including appropriate tools for research with children, their communities and other relevant stakeholders 

● Creating research papers with recommendations for Street Child and relevant stakeholders; these papers will form the basis for future research and initiatives 

● Collaborating with local partners and stakeholders to share expertise and gather data 

 

This is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn about the development sector through an immersive experience, and to make a lasting contribution to Street Child and its aim to offer educational access to out of school children all over the world. 

 

THE ORGANISATION Street Child's aim is to create educational opportunities for some of the world’s most vulnerable children. We began our work in 2008 in Sierra Leone working with a small number of street children, nine years later we have helped to transform the lives of more than 100,000 children across Sierra Leone, Liberia, Sri Lanka and Nepal. In 2017 we launched our first project in Nigeria helping children impacted by war in the North East of the country. And now in 2018, we are launching in Uganda, where a refugee crisis and poverty leave too many children devoid of basic education.  

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

● A research degree with a strong academic record 

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Professional and diligent in presentation and conduct 

● Independent and capable of proactive work plan management with minimal support 

● Flexible, adaptable and able to thrive in a start-up environment 

● Thoughtful, resourceful, reflective, and eager to learn   

● Culturally responsive and respectful

● Keen interest in understanding and contributing to the development sector 

 

The successful applicant must be prepared to live and work in austere conditions when required, and to travel independently to urban, rural and remote project sites. The applicant must be able to manage his or her work plan and report regularly to the team on progress, and will be considered a valued member of the team.   

 

A fundraising commitment will be required of the successful applicant, for which support will be provided by Street Child UK staff. Flights and food are at the applicant’s own expense. Accommodation will be provided by Street Child at a fixed cost, and will require sharing rooms with another volunteer of any gender. A detailed breakdown of costs and expenses will be provided for those applicants selected for interview. 

 

Whilst this is initially a voluntary role, for applicants with relevant experience who have the ability to add strategic value, there is potential to attain a more permanent position with the organisation.
